Pricing

Pricing for metal detecting services varies significantly depending on the client's needs, the type of service, and the pricing structure used by GCRR.

Services are typically offered by charging hourly rates, flat fees, or by contract.

Common pricing models

Reward-based services  ( From free and up ) Depending on the customer's circumstances
This model is common for the retrieval of lost sentimental items, like a wedding ring or keys.

  • No upfront fee: The service is often free if the item is not found.
  • Client-determined reward: If the item is recovered, the client offers a reward based on what the item means to them. For example, some people are very generous because the item is sentimental.
  • Reward expectations: Common rewards range from $100–$200, though some detectorists may accept a lesser amount, like a cup of coffee or a meal.  ....

Hourly rates: ( $30.00 per hour ) Contingent
Some professionals charge for their time, especially for more extensive or commercial searches.

  • Typical rates: Hourly rates can vary from $30 to over $100, depending on the  *location, and the *complexity of the search.
  • Time factor: A common arrangement may be a higher rate for the first hour and a lower rate for subsequent hours.
  • Travel time: Costs may include charges for travel time, especially for long distances.

Flat fees
For some jobs, especially those with a predictable scope, a flat fee may be negotiated.

  • Example for property stakes: In one instance, a Professional land surveyor charged $1,600 to find property stakes. A metal detectorist could offer a lower, flat fee for the same job at $600.00 - flat rate charge.
  • Commercial applications: Commercial services, such as searching for evidence for law enforcement, are typically handled on a professional contract basis with flat fees or retainers.
  • Flat rates are discussed with the customer before the search begins,

Factors influencing the price

Several key factors determine the final cost of a metal detecting service:

  • Item type: The value and sentimental nature of the lost item can influence the price. People are often willing to pay more for a lost wedding ring than for lost keys.
  • Search location: Recovering an item from water or a challenging environment will cost more than a simple yard search, as it requires specialized equipment and expertise.
  • Search urgency: Clients often want immediate service when they've lost something valuable. Professionals may charge more for rapid, on-demand response.
  • Distance: Travel costs, including gas and time, are often factored into the final price, especially for long-distance jobs.
  • Contingency pricing: Some detectorists work on a contingency basis, where they get a percentage (e.g., 10–25%) of the item's value if found. However, this is less common for sentimental items.

Business and Ethical Considerations

For those considering a professional service, it is important to clarify all costs upfront and be aware of ethical practices.

  • Transparency:  GCRR  will be transparent about our pricing model and any potential extra costs before starting the search.
  • Ethical treasure hunting: Most metal detectorists who offer services prioritize reuniting people with their sentimental belongings rather than profiting from the find.
  • Legal agreements  and Contracts: For larger, high-value commercial searches, a written contract or agreement is crucial to outline costs, scope, and payment terms.
  • All private property landowners are written permission only, with owners permission before any search takes place.
  • We remove all trash that is dug, and all holes will be filled as best as can be depending on soil conditions, and target location
